Overview

Our patients very frequently request facial rejuvenation and Dr. Mentz usually performs a facelift almost every surgery day. Facial rejuvenation is complex and every patient represents a completely different set of goals. The goals of facial rejuvenation are:

  • To achieve a natural, and more youthful facial contour
  • To remove deep facial folds, soften excessive sagging and drooping of large wrinkles
  • To restore a smooth jawline and elegant neck contour
  • Freshen quality of the skin
  • Open and refresh the eye area
  • Elevate brow area and smooth vertical and horizontal lines on the forehead

As the face ages, the collagen and elastin fibers that give it firmness and elasticity begin to degrade, leading to the development of wrinkles. This combined with gravity and a weakening of the underlying muscles and tissues causes sagging in the midface that can lead to the appearance of jowls and a double chin, even in individuals of a normal weight. To achieve maximum rejuvenation and natural-looking results, triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Mentz accurately measures, grades, and records the amount of aging or laxity in each area of the face to determine the facelift method that will achieve the most effective results for a patient. Dr. Mentz, who has achieved consistently successful results with this innovative method since 2007, introduced the technique to the Texas Society of Plastic Surgery in 2008. Dr. Mentz’s goal is to reverse the effects of time on the aging face. This requires specialized knowledge in nutrition and holistic medicine, skin biochemistry, pharmacology, and modern plastic surgical techniques. Dr. Mentz’s goal is to provide comprehensive cosmetic medicine and surgery that minimizes risk, maximizes benefit, and provides the best possible service to you.

Blending Techniques

This topic, which Dr. Mentz has presented to plastic surgeons at international, national, and state meetings, focuses on his multi-dimensional approach to facial rejuvenation. Dr. Mentz blends both surgical and non-surgical techniques such as facelifting, skin care, lasers, injectables, and fat grafting to achieve more natural and balanced results. Dr. Mentz’s innovative and effective approach to facelifting draws patients from around the globe. Dr. Mentz, who has achieved consistently successful results with this innovative method since 2007, introduced the technique to the Texas Society of Plastic Surgery in 2008.Through computer imaging and the consultation process, the various facelift methods, which includes the mini facelift, MAC lift, deep layer, multi layer, and SMAS facelift, can be demonstrated on the patient’s image to evaluate the best options for a patient. Dr. Mentz has consistently found that three options can be determined for each patient, and, of these, one will most effectively maximize the rejuvenating results that can be achieved.

Surgical Technique

In a facelift procedure, Dr. Mentz makes incisions that allow him to separate the skin from the underlying fat, muscles, and soft tissues. Usually these incisions begin in the hairline at the temples and continue around the ear, ending in the lower scalp. Through these incisions, Dr. Mentz uses a three-layer technique to remove excess facial skin and tighten the deeper muscles and soft tissues to achieve results which are long-lasting and natural in appearance. In some cases, liposuction of the neck and jowls may also be performed to reduce fatty deposits. The skin is then re-draped and smoothed over the new contours, and sutures are also used to close the incisions. Once healed, any scarring is typically well-concealed in the hairline and natural contours of the face and ears. The facelift procedure takes several hours to complete, and it is performed at Dr. Mentz’s AAAASF-certified SurgiCentre facility in Houston, Texas under the supervision of a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Recovery

After your surgical procedure, a special cooling mask will be provided and placed on your face. This helps to minimize the bruising and swelling on your face. Small tubes may be inserted beneath the skin to prevent fluid accumulation. If necessary, Dr. Mentz may recommend an overnight stay at one of his SurgiCentre’s recovery suites, where you will be cared for by a highly-trained registered nurse. Moreover, if you live within 20 miles of our facility, Dr. Mentz will offer a visit to your home by a nurse who is trained to assist you with post-operative recovery. The nurse will change any dressings, monitor your recovery, assist you with your medication, and provide Dr. Mentz with an update on your consultation. After surgery, the greatest swelling is noticed within 24 to 48 hours, though moderate swelling may last for weeks. It is recommended to continue elevation of your head to reduce initial swelling. Bruising typically diminishes within 2 weeks. Most sutures are removed 5-7 days after surgery. Typically, patients are able to return to work in 2 weeks and resume exercise and other strenuous activities in about 6 weeks.

Facelift FAQs

The Best Method?

To accomplish maximum rejuvenation and natural facelift results, Dr. Mentz accurately measures, grades, and records the amount of aging or laxity in each area of the face to determine which method would provide the best facelift results for the individual patient. Dr. Mentz has consistently achieved successful results with this customized method since 2007. He introduced the technique to the Texas Society of Plastic Surgery in 2008, and has since published the technique in facial plastic surgery textbooks.

The different types of facelifts include:

  • The mini-facelift: also known as the traditional facelift or weekend facelift. This method is ideal for patients with skin laxity but mild deep tissue sagging. This facelift only lifts and tightens the exterior skin layer.
  • Short-scar facelift: also known as the MACS (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) facelift. This method utilizes a slightly smaller incision and lifts the skin only.
  • SMAS facelift: also known as the 2-layer facelift. This type of facelift is the most extensive and provides the best results for patients with extreme skin laxity and soft-tissue descent.

Through our digital resources such as computer imaging and an in-depth consultation process, Dr. Mentz and his patient coordinator are able to demonstrate the various facelift options on the patient’s own image. This allows the patient to get a visual understanding of the procedure and can evaluate the best option. Combining Face Surgeries?

To maximize rejuvenation results, patients often choose to have a facelift procedure in combination with both surgical and non-surgical procedures which may include a neck lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), an endoscopic brow lift, stem-cell enriched fat grafting, nose surgery (rhinoplasty), and laser resurfacing which reduces fine wrinkles and improves the skin’s tone and texture. During your consultation with Dr. Mentz, he will thoroughly explain the degree of laxity in each area of your face, so he can choose the procedure or combination of procedures to help you obtain the most youthful and natural look.

Deciding Options?

A facelift is considered one of the most comprehensive procedures to restore a youthful appearance to the face. To achieve maximum rejuvenation and natural-looking results, Dr. Mentz accurately measures, grades, and records the amount of aging or laxity in each area of the face to determine the facelift method that will achieve the most effective results for a patient. Facelift Benefits?

A facelift procedure is designed to restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance to the face by correcting the visible signs of aging that occur as a result of diminished skin elasticity, collagen production, and skin quality. This comprehensive procedure is considered one of the most effective and long-lasting solutions to return a smoother, rejuvenated and uplifted look to the face through correction of the following characteristics:

  • Sagging in the midface that can cause the appearance of jowls
  • Deep creases along the nose that extend to the corners of the mouth
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin which can cause the appearance of a double chin
