What Is Lip Augmentation?

Whether you’re looking for a plump, sexy mouth or just a little volume for thin, aging lips, lip injections are a safe and effective option for lip enhancement. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Mentz offers two methods for lip enhancement in Houston, TX: injectable cosmetic fillers and fat transfer.  Cosmetic fillers, like Juvéderm or Restylane, provide temporary volume to the lips that last 5 – 6 months.  A fat transfer offers a longer-lasting enhancement by removing fat from another area of the body and grafting the purified fat into the lips. After lip augmentation, many patients look younger and more attractive with fuller lips that balance out the face.

Procedure Technique

Dr. Mentz uses the patient’s stomach or inner thigh as the donor spot to harvest a small amount of fat, then the purified fat is carefully injected into areas of the lips that need volume. Dr. Mentz will go over recovery instructions depending on the amount of fat removed. For lip fillers, patients may be treated on the same day as their consultation in 15-30 minutes. After lip injections, patients may have temporary swelling and redness.

Lip Augmentation FAQ

Fillers or Fat Graft?

Lip injections with cosmetic fillers like Juvéderm or Restylane are a great option for first-time patients. For patients that have been consistently happy with their lip injection results from cosmetic fillers, fat grafting is a persistent treatment option.

What is a facial fat transfer?

Once injected into the lips, 30% of the fat cells survive the transfer and will remain in the lips. For this reason, many patients receive multiple lip injection treatments until they achieve the desired result.

Can I fill other areas, too?

In addition to enhancing the appearance of the lips, cosmetic fillers can also be injected into the cheeks and hands for a younger, softer appearance. Both the cheeks and the hands are common areas for age-related volume loss and restoring the volume in these areas can make you look and feel younger.
